Star Wars in Concert: Music and Movies and Lasers! Oh my!

Art featured on my souvenir t-shirt.

I don’t know what I was thinking. This show was so perfectly geared towards the Jedi Musician’s interests that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to top it. And to think that summer is just beginning. What now?

Obviously my son’s two favorite things in the world are music and Star Wars. This concert, featuring scenes from the entire Star Wars series on a giant screen and a live orchestra with a full choir to accompany those scenes, was spectacular. Throw in lively host Anthony Daniels (C- 3PO), an appearance by composer John Williams, perfect weather at a famous outdoor amphitheatre, lots of available snacks (booze for the parents!) and a sea of Star Wars fans; it’s pretty much a dream come true for kids like mine. Rocky sat through the whole performance with eyes wide open, just taking it all in.

In addition to the movie clips being shown, you could occasionally see images of the instrumentalists around the outside, Rocky was giddy to see which instrument plays what part. At one point he was pretending to conduct, egged on by the guy behind us so I know he didn’t mind. Other kids (and adults still acting like kids) engaged in light saber battles. We decided not to bring his light saber and risk a stranger getting whacked. Other folks did not have these reservations. We knew we made the right decision when we overheard other parents take them away for the very reason we didn’t bring ours. That would have been our child for sure. He gets a little too enthused! A few parents showed up in costume. I admired their dedication.

We lucked out with a parking spot that made it easy to make a quick getaway afterwards, this because my husband insisted we get there WAAAYYY too early. We ended up eating our picnic meal before we ever got to our box seats and we spent a lot more $$ than anticipated but that parking spot was golden at the end when all the other cars were jammed in together and we could just sail right on out of the lot.

Rocky was so jacked up that he didn’t even fall asleep until after midnight. Some kids go on summer vacations. Mine goes to events like this one. I hope he remembers it always. He’d better for what it cost!

Additional tour dates have not been announced as of this posting but I know it toured the country last year. They may well go on the road again. Star Wars fans, don’t miss it!

  1. Well, it was nice to officially “meet” you! Like you, my husband and I just have one boy. We always say, “God could only give us one child, so He gave us a really good one.” And, like yours, the boy is OBSESSED with all things Star Wars. We have a ten-foot-wide Star Wars mural painted on his bedroom wall. He could win the gold, if battling with light sabers was an Olympic event to compete in. He has nearly ever Star Wars Lego set ever manufactured. He can recite every single movie. And, like your boy, ours LOVES the piano! Loves it. He plays nonstop. It’s so funny, because he’s such a boy — always outside, rolling around in the dirt and the mud and using sticks as swords, and then he comes indoors and plays Mozart on the piano, and plays it well. And…he would have LOVED the concert you went to! Wow. What a cool thing to do! Thanks for stopping by my blog — hopefully we’ll see more of you in the future.
